Utricularia subulata, the Zigzag Bladderwort, is a perennial, terrestrial bladderwort with numerous, small bright yellow flowers. U. subulata prefers sandy peat that is constantly moist. It has subterranean stolons that form numerous small leaves (<1/2"). The tiny bladder traps form in the soil, and catch small critters, like nematodes. The wiry flower stalk bends at each node giving it a zigzag look. It flowers in early Spring, and can appear in mass, as a delightful yellow carpet. Some flowers stay closed. In winter it dies back to its subterranean stolons, to survive the cold. This yellow-flowered bladderwort is a vigorous grower and can be a harmless, pretty "weed" in your collection.  The Zigzag Bladderwort is the most widely spread of all Utricularia species.

Height: 1/2 "
Plant Type: Perennial, tropical to temperate
Soil:
Light: Bright to partial bright indoors, full sun outdoors
Use: Grows well outdoors, and on the window sill and greenhouse.  Great terrarium plant.
